What to teach your kids ahead of ICE raids at school

There is no doubt that it is a dangerous time in America to be undocumented. Together with the present Administration’s goals toward removing undocumented immigrants and challenging the Constitutional right of birthright citizenship, today’s immigrants face many hardships and challenges even when they get to the relative safety of the United States.

Below is some information you may want to share with your school-age children.

Schools self-prepare for raids

The Las Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is being proactive about future raids on their undocumented students, like there have been in other major cities. They have begun preparing staff with mandatory training for the protocols of what to do should an ICE raid begin.

Officials with LAUSD have reiterated their commitment to ensure the safety of all its students, not just those who are citizens or have green cards. They are duty-bound to protect the privacy of the students’ and their families’ immigration status.

Another thing school officials are doing is handing out “red cards” that detail the safer responses to any attempted raids by immigration officers at home or school.

What some immigrants don’t know

Human beings here in the United States, whether documented or undocumented, have certain rights under the Constitution. While the current Administration has threatened to end birthright citizenship, that is not something that one person is legally able to alter.

Now more than ever, it is important to learn all you can about your rights and responsibilities under the federal immigration laws. Keep abreast of any imminent changes by reading or watching the news in a language you understand and seek legal guidance when possible.
