What to expect during a marriage green card interview

On Behalf of | Sep 23, 2024 | immigration |

Many immigrants marry a U.S. citizen and join their spouse in the States. This is one of several ways to obtain a green card so that an immigrant can lawfully live and work in the U.S. However, a marriage green card is not an easy document to obtain.

Immigrants often must prove that their marriage to a U.S. citizen is legitimate. If a marriage is fraudulent and only done to help someone gain easy access to the U.S., then the immigrant and the U.S. citizen could potentially face criminal charges.

How can immigrants prove their marriage is real? Immigrants may need to undergo a marriage green card interview. A marriage green card interview is an intense and extensive process that often involves many personal questions. Here are some questions you may be expected to answer:

Questions about your relationship

Some of the questions you may be asked are how your relationship started. These questions can include where you met your spouse, what you find attractive about your partner and when you married your spouse. You may also be asked more intimate questions, such as where you had your first date, what you did on your honeymoon and your future plans with your spouse.

Questions about your personal life

You may be asked questions about your personal life. You could be asked, for example, your work history. You could also be asked about your aspirations and goals in the U.S. You may also be asked about your daily routine, hobbies and education. Your answers will be compared with the answers your spouse gives, to see if they align.

Questions about your partner

The interviewer may ask you about your spouse. You may be asked about your spouse’s interests, where they work and their involvement with their family. Ultimately, the immigration authorities will be looking for the kind of details that spouses generally know about each other when they have a real relationship.

Legal guidance can help you prepare for a marriage green card interview — and make the process inherently less stressful by helping you understand what questions to anticipate.
