Asylum and Refugee Status

Certain persons who are in the United States may be eligible to apply for political asylum. However, qualifying for political asylum is difficult. Generally, applicants must show that they either have been persecuted or reasonably fear persecution in their home country on account of their race, religion, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.
